Breif Description of Activity:
Students can either use this activity on their own at their computer, or else it can be used as a classroom activity involving the whole class using the Smartboard. There are two activities involved first one is going to www.poweroften.ca and familiarized the students with the power of ten cards on the Smartboard. Students will drag the squares to create the proper number in the ten frame. The next activity will occur after the children are familiar with the structure of the ten frame. The teacher will bring up the website http://ca.ixl.com/math/grade-1, and click on option A.2 Counting Review - up to 20. Once the website is displayed the teacher will select students to come up and count the objects shown on the Smartboard and place the correct answer in the blank. This website allows students to become familiar with common practices of counting objects up to 20; the use of ten frames is one strategie that is used to accomplish this goal. This activity allows all of the students in the class to be involved in the learning process. This website times the activity and when it is done individually the students can work toward beating thier previous best time.
General Learner Outcome:
- Develop number sense from 0 - 100.
Specific Learner Outcomes:
- Recognize at a glance and name familiar arrangements of 1 - 10 objects or dots.
- Represent and describe numbers to 20.
ICT Outcomes:
C4: Students will use organizational processes and tools to manage inquiry.
C5: Students will use technology to aid collaboration during inquiry.
F6: Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the operating skills required in a variety of technologies.
P2: Students will organize and manipulate data.
Rationale of Computer Integration:
The use of computer and technology integration in this activity accomplishes a variety of goals. First of all this activity allows students to learn through an interactive activity. All of the students have the opportunity of learning through doing and those students that are confused have the chance to see others do the activity and learn through the actions of others. When this activity is done individually the students have the opportunity to learn how to operate technology and do learning activities at home or outside of the classroom. The students also have the chance to improve at thier own pace and learn from thier mistakes.
Search Strategies Employed:
When I went about searching for a website to use for this activity I first looked at the Mathematics Program of Studies. I then chose a Specific Learning Outcome and grade. I then went to google and typed in the grade and subject. I then came across the IXL website which is a website that has a pile of learning activities and different interactive options that can be used in the classroom. This website offers options for grades from 1 - 10. I also came across the Horizon School division website which led me to a variety of math games available for grade one students. I then chose the power of ten game which led me to the power of ten website.
