English Language Arts
Key Concepts
The main goal of the English Language Arts program is to create and appreciation of language and literacy in all its forms. The process of learning language starts at birth and continues throughout a lifetime. Language is the basis of all communication, children use language to express thier thoughts, feelings, experiences, and establish relationships. The Language Arts program is based upon six strands which are Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Viewing, and Representing. All the Language Arts are interrelated and interdependant, through the utilization of one stregnthen and supports the other. The six Language Arts are integrated within the outcomes of the ELA program of studies.

Strategies and Lesson Plan Ideas
Balanced Literacy is composed of three parts:
One-third Personal Writing- The main purpose in personal writin is to develop reflective qualities, expression, fluency, habitts of writing which enhance communication of thoughts and reactions. This type of writing extends KNOWLEDGE OF SELF. This type of writing is expressed through Feelings, Journals, Recoounts, and Opinion.
One-third Literacy Writing- The purpose of literary writing is to understand the relationships and human themes and patterns through narrative knowing. This kind of writing EDUCATES THE IMAGINATION (knowedge of others). Literary writing is seen through Plays, Poetry, Stories, Literary Writing (Essays).
One-third Expository Writing- The purpose of expository writing is to equip the student with the power genres and useful language in the lived world of common reality to get and give what is needed. This kind of writing increases the KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD. Examples of expository writing are: Reports, Description, Explanation, Persuasion, Proceedure, Process, Argument.
Six Strands Of English Language Arts:
THE LANGUAGE ARTS
1. LISTENING: This is a person`s first contact with language. Listening enables people to create and respond to a variety of aesthetis texts, obtain and communicate information and build relationships with others.
2. SPEAKING: In the foundation of literacy, students learn to speak in ways that are appropriate for time, place, audience, and oral language carries a community`s stories, values and beleifs.
3. READING: Reading provides students with a means of accessing the ideas, viewsand experiences of others. We read differently for difeerent purposes.
4. WRITING: Writing enables students to explore, shape and clarify thoughts and communicate them to others. By using an effective writing process, they discover and refine ideas and composes and revise with increasing skill.
5. VIEWING: Visual texts enable students to recognize, analyze, and respond to ways in which media texts construct reality and influence thier perception of self and others.
6. REPRESENTING: Enables students to communicate thier ideas through a variety of media. It also enables them to aquire information and to appreciate ideas and experiences of others.

Speaking and Listening: Book talk, Grand Conversations, Choral Reading, Hot Seat, Interactive Read-Alouds, Story Retelling.
Reading: Book Talks, Choral Reading, Double-Entry Journals, Grand Conversations, Readers Theatre, Story Boards, Godilocks Strategies.
Writing: Authors Chair, Clusters, KWL Charts, Quickwrites, Reading Logs, "All About.." Books, Clusters, RAFT, Interactive Writes.
Viewing: Venn Diagrams, Open Minded Portraits, Sketch-to-Stretch.
Representing: Sketch-to-Stretch, Venn Diagram, Quilts, Reading Logs.
